Chapter 25
Whatever it is, itâs not a Gremlin. The pale green light of the luminescent slime on the walls washes over it, and I see a hairless black body with four thick, trunk-like legs, giant yellow eyes as big as my fists, and a serrated beak that could cut me in half with a single bite.
The creature lifts its massive head and snorts a lungful of the air, as if it can smell us, but not see us. Maybe itâs like a T-rex from Earth that supposedly couldnât see its prey unless it was moving.
But then the head comes down, and those giant yellow eyes zero in on us and pinch into deadly slits. It opens its beak with a deep, throbbing roar.
âShoot it!â Fargo cries. She pulls the trigger, spitting a pitiful three-round burst at the monster. With the suppressor on the barrel, it sounds like a paint ball gun to me.
I flick off the safety on my pistol and shoot four rounds, aiming for the head and eyes. As far as I can tell none of them hit. Either that, or my sidearm isnât strong enough to make it through the skull.
Fargo squeezes off another two bursts, and the creature roars a second time, rearing up on its hind legs, and hammering them into the ground with a ground-shaking boom.
A massive tail whips out of the dark and pierces Fargo straight through her thigh with a gleaming, three-foot-long stinger that might as well be a sword.
She cries out and collapses to one knee, and then one half of her face droops, and she goes completely limp.
I dive down beside Fargo, to roll her over and search for another epipen on her belt. Her eyes are rolling in her head, and sheâs foaming at the mouth. Shit. That canât be good. Spotting a second injector pen, I snatch it off her belt, but before I can plunge it into her leg, the titan that stabbed her tucks its head and charges us.
Making a snap decision, I drop the pen, and reach for Fargoâs rifle instead. Yanking it up, the strap pulls taut, and I take awkward aim.
If this doesnât drop the beast, I wonât get another shot before it tramples us both.
I hold my breath, tuck the stock into my shoulder, and pull the trigger.
A burst of three bullets whistles out.
All three hit the monster in its left eye. It screams with enough decibels to make my whole body vibrate, then trips, and slides across the rocky floor. The tip of its massive beak comes to a rest a few inches from my outstretched leg, and I find myself staring into three gory bullet holes in that fist-sized yellow eye.
A gurgling sounds brings me back, and I see that Fargo is experiencing some kind of seizure. Casting about frantically, I find the epipen that I dropped and stab it into her uninjured thigh.
But nothing happens.
She just keeps flopping on the ground.
âCome on, Fargo!â I scream as I turn her on her side in an attempt to keep her airways clear.
